My Story

October 18, 2010

Has Melissa's music and message helped you, a friend or loved one get through the difficult battle with cancer? Email us your story. We will be featuring stories throughout the month of October.

MY STORY
My story has a happy ending. September of 2003 was a terrible year. My dad was diagnosed with cancer, my mom passed away and after the funeral, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This is a very scary time no matter how early you catch it. Mine was in the very earliest stages and I had a lumpectomy and radiation. I have been cancer free for 7 years from diagnosis. I had the best support group ever and every day during my radiation, I received a little gift by a secret support group member. I never saw anyone putting them on my porch but something was there almost every day. A card, some candy, some sort of sign of love and caring from my family and friends. At the end I was given two parties. One out of state with family in Colorado and one instate by family and friends in SC. Nothing could have been a better medicine to lift the spirits of someone whose husband worked far away and couldn’t be there with me.

The official kick off of Pinktober 2010 at the Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood CA was a huge success! We arrived early to start checking in the 400 M.E.I.N. members and guests who attended. We hooked up with Kel & Camille from the Eco-Friendly Street Team who volunteered to be our roving reporters and photographers for the day. It was soooo hot that day. No really....it was nasty HOT! We sweated our way through registration and tried not to look as wilted as we were. It was so amazing meeting so many members and breast cancer survivors!

Spring into Action!

Learn about Early Detection and Help Others

As we're enjoying these blooming days of Spring, let's honor this beginning season of the year by making sure we all take care of bodies. Either self-examine or visit your doctor for your mammogram checkup. This is also a great time to donate to help others get tested and to breast cancer research. We believe that no one needs to be alone with this disease, and that we are all connected.

Research some sites and help out if you can. Here are a couple: www.thebreastcancersite.com
www.nbcam.org

National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month
Inspired by the American Dietetic Association

Melissa often shares about the important role nutrition has taken after her breast cancer diagnosis. Whole foods are the key to good health for all. Fast foods and other processed foods may fill the body up, but prevent proper nutrition from being absorbed. "Eat Right!"

Take some time to educate yourself and your loved ones about proper nutrtion. It may take some time to integrate these changes into your life, but your health and well-being are worth it. Allow this to be a journey of progress not perfection!

PINK NOTES:

Early Detection is Key
Review these brief notes from the American Cancer Society then view here for full info:

  1. Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health.

  2. Women in their 20's and 30's should have a clinical breast exam (CBE) as part of a periodic (regular) health exam by a health professional, preferably every 3 years. After age 40, women should have a breast exam by a health professional every year.

  3. Breast self exam (BSE) is an option for women starting in their 20's. Women should be told about the benefits and limitations of BSE. Women should report any breast changes to their health professional right away.

  4. Women at high risk should get an MRI and a mammogram every year. Women at moderately increased risk should talk with their doctors about benefits and limitations of adding MRI screening to their yearly mammogram. Yearly MRI screening is not recommended for women whose lifetime risk of breast cancer is less than 15%.

Be Informed
Be sure to visit your doctor and get expert attention for any concerns. Take additional action by doing research on the internet to help answer questions and to seek support. Medicinenet.com is a great resource.

Proper Nutrition is Vital
Melissa has been quoted as saying, "Nutrition, nutrition... Eat your fruits and vegetables" in regards to staying healthy. Read more about nutrition from BreastCancer.org.

Wear your Pink/Give Support
Buy merchandise that supports breast cancer research and early detection services or donate to your favorite organization. View the sites on the right and navigate to their donation page.

Welcome to the M.E.I.N. Pink Page! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but this page will stay active throughout the year so stay in touch.

Melissa's own life changing battle with breast cancer began in October 2004. She's an advocate for breast cancer research as well as environmental sustainability, and makes an important connection between the two.

We've created this new "pink" section of melissaetheridge.com to share an open space for information and awareness. Get your pink on, make a donation and get informed about early detection! See our "Pink Notes" at the bottom of this page.
